OUR WORK
Equity
In conjunction with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Equity Pilot Program, on behalf of the Institute of Healthcare Delivery Design at the University of Illinois, we explored the experiences of socially vulnerable hypertensive patients and their providers and designed an action planning session and booklet that we piloted and implemented from 2021-2023 to improve uptake and adherence at UI Health. In 2023-2024, we explored the experiences of high-risk pregnancy patients to design an additional insert on preeclampsia for the session. We are continuing to work with several teams at UI Health to scale the program to more speciality areas and clinics.
Support
In conjunction with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Equity Pilot Program, on behalf of the Institute of Healthcare Delivery Design at the University of Illinois, we co-designed a hands-on cooking class program with patients, dietitians, community health workers and occupational therapists at UI Health to help patients learn about nutrition and change their eating habits. The 6-week program was successfully piloted in English and Spanish in 2023-2024 at the 55th and Pulaski Health Collaborative. We are working with the clinic to keep the program running and offer it to more patients this year.
Improvement
In collaboration with a team from the University of Chicago Medicine, as a part of an NIH-funded RO1 study focused on implementing COPD interventions at healthcare sites across the nation to reduce readmission rates, we collected baseline data via qualitative interviews with site leads, administrators, clinicians, patients, and caregivers to inform interventions that have been implemented at each site. During the implementation, we facilitated three remote co-design planning sessions with patients/caregivers and key stakeholders at half of the sites to enhance implementation efforts. This year we are supporting post-intervention follow-up interviews to assess whether supports such as co-design improved implementation efforts and how they might be incorporated into future processes.
Strategy
On behalf of a startup that works with healthcare associations to create physician and patient-driven research networks, we identified design criteria, guidelines and potential key features to inform the product strategy of a new evidence-based clinical data platform by conducting qualitative interviews with leading physician specialists across the United States.
Investigation
In the U.S., we explored money management and investment behaviors and evaluated potential concepts for using cryptocurrency. Working alongside our client, we translated our findings and aligned on opportunities and next steps.
Immersion
For The Darklands Foundation, we examined the financial management practices of Ngäbe indigenous women in Bocas del Toro, Panamá to inform the development of a mobile phone-based money exchange app for these small business owners, farmers and fishers.
Inclusion
In Colombia and Kenya, we explored money management behaviors and evaluated potential concepts among unbanked and underbanked individuals. Working alongside our client, we translated our findings and aligned on opportunities that would resonate across cultures.
Prevention
Through an immersive review of the daily routines of biomedical technicians and respiratory therapists, we identified how to best adapt our client’s energy equipment maintenance app for ventilator maintenance purposes in rural and other remote locations.
Engagement
On behalf of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we teamed up with Sonder Collective to understand how healthcare workers make immunization program-related decisions in Africa. We explored how context, system and tools affect how data is used to inform strategies and tactics in Mozambique and facilitated a workshop in Portuguese with stakeholders to brainstorm opportunities and next steps. Instruction
After coaching the C-Suite of an energy software company in the human-centered design mindset, we co-created a research approach to understand the needs of power plant operators in remote villages and prototype a new application. Together with the team, we executed the approach side-by-side in context in Alaska.
Exploration
On behalf of a Louisiana-based worker's compensation insurance company, we examined opportunities with agents and local businesses to identify value-add services that would also help the state grow and thrive.
Testimonials
"Onda Collective was just what we needed to pull off a multi-country research project for one of our most innovative financial services clients. Thanks to Hannah and Rebecca’s global network and high-quality boots on the ground, we were able to tap into the mindsets of hard-to-reach participants and glean nuanced insights into the local cultures we were interested in exploring. The Onda team seamlessly integrated our concepts into the research methodology and translated the findings in a way that provoked a productive conversation to inform the global strategy of our multi-disciplinary client team. As a human-centered design research partner, Onda is a true asset.”
